Concertina book
Unique, handmade concertina book, monoprint from hand drawn marks on Fabriano 5 300g paper, millboard cover, 8x8x105cm
A graphic musical score is made from the ‘performative drawing’ process forming a monoprint, which is randomly cut up and assembled into the form of a concertina book, to lead a performance from left to right, start to finish.
The act of giving the graphic score to the performer brings about the possibility of sound or the absence of it reflected in the embossed depression of the strings.

This approach to drawing is part of ongoing research into the relationship between the visual, the experiential and the auditory. The aim is to capture a sense of the intangible space between the impact of elements that make a performance, with particular reference to the performance of ‘classical’ music: the instructions within the language of notation, the effect of space on the acoustic experience, the memory, the physicality and psychological moment of performance experienced by the soloist on the concert platform and the presence of an audience.

Concertina book
Unique, handmade concertina book, graphite, colour pencil, embossed with a full set of classical guitar strings on an etching press, Fabriano 5 300g paper, millboard cover, 9.5x11x105cm
A graphic musical score made from the ‘performative drawing’ process and the impression left by used nylon and silver plated bronze wound guitar strings embossed using an etching press. Traces of sweat from the performer’s fingers in contact with the metal are evident where a chemical reaction has taken place over time. There is a flow from start to finish defined by the length of the strings.
